Why Collagen Works and Why That Matters for Buyers
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is the structural material in skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone. The body’s own production declines steadily from roughly the mid twenties onwards, which is the biological reason the category exists at all.
Native collagen is a large triple helix molecule that the body does not absorb efficiently. That is why the commercial ingredient is almost always hydrolyzed collagen, meaning collagen broken down enzymatically into short peptide chains that survive digestion and reach circulation. Hydrolyzed collagen accounts for the clear majority of the supplement market for exactly this reason.
Three things determine whether a collagen peptide performs the way the finished brand wants it to.
The first is type. Type I and Type III dominate skin, hair, nail, bone and general beauty positioning, and they come mainly from bovine hide, porcine skin and fish. Type II is cartilage derived, usually from chicken sternum, and is used in joint formulations, often at very small doses in undenatured form.
The second is molecular weight, and this is the specification most buyers underestimate. Most quality food grade peptides sit in the low thousands of daltons, and the certificate of analysis should state the distribution rather than a marketing figure.
The third is dose. The Consumer Base Has Completely Changed

Domestic European production covers only part of demand and carries a meaningful price premium.

Three factors drive the volatility. The first is that collagen raw material is a by product, so supply is tied to meat and fish processing volumes. When cattle throughput or hide availability tightens, collagen feels it immediately, and the ingredient competes for the same raw material as gelatin and as pharmaceutical and cosmetic grades. The second is compliance, which is not optional. Bovine material must satisfy EU TSE and BSE rules under Regulation (EC) 999/2001 with documented origin and veterinary health certification, while marine material must comply with EU residue monitoring for heavy metals and dioxins. The third is certification cost and lead time. There are currently no EU approved health claims for collagen under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006. Whatever the clinical literature shows, a brand selling into the EU cannot make specific skin, joint or bone claims on pack.
This is not an ingredient buyer problem in the narrow sense, but it becomes one quickly. Your customer’s marketing constraints shape what specification they actually need, and a supplier who understands that conversation is more useful than one who only quotes a price per tonne.
What to Look for in Collagen Peptides as an Ingredient Buyer
Start with protein content. Food grade hydrolyzed collagen should typically test at 90 percent protein or higher on a dry basis, with moisture below around 8 percent.
Ask for the molecular weight distribution on the certificate of analysis rather than accepting it as a marketing claim, because it is the single best predictor of how the ingredient will behave in your customer’s formulation and how it will perform in the body.
Heavy metals should be tested on every batch, covering lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium, and results should sit well inside regulatory limits. This matters most for marine material, where accumulation is a genuine risk rather than a theoretical one. Microbiological testing should cover total plate count, yeasts and moulds, Salmonella and E. coli on a batch basis.
Solubility and sensory performance deserve a proper trial in the format you actually intend to use, since cold solubility, clarity in solution and neutral taste behave very differently in a bottle than in a sachet.
Traceability and origin documentation should cover species, country of origin, veterinary certification and TSE and BSE compliance for bovine material. Where the end market demands halal, kosher, organic or non GMO certification, confirm that the certificate is current and that it covers the specific production site rather than the trading company.
Batch specific certificates of analysis are the baseline expectation now, not a favour from the supplier.
Storage matters as well. Collagen peptides are hygroscopic and should be held below 25 degrees Celsius at under 65 percent relative humidity to avoid caking, with shelf life typically running 24 to 36 months under proper conditions.
